REEL RASQUACHE ART & FILM FESTIVAL STAGES AN EXHIBITION OF ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING LATINO ARTISTS
August 12 – September 7, 2011

The Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival, in cooperation with Cactus Gallery in Eagle Rock, is presenting its first independently produced art exhibition, featuring eight Angeleno artists. The exhibition, organized and curated by artist and photographer Angela María Ortíz S., opens at Cactus Gallery Saturday, August 12 and continues through September 7, 2011.

The opening night event and the exhibition are being presented free of charge. Saturday night reception coincides with Northeast L.A. (NELA) Second Saturday Gallery Night. For map: www.nelaart.com

Featured artist, muralist, teacher, and mentor Margaret Garcia, whose work has been included in numerous exhibitions in California, Texas, and Mexico, and whose mural, “Tree of Califas”, is part of the Universal City Station of the L.A. Metro Rail, was the recipient of the RRAFF’s 2011 Vision Award. “Ms. Garcia has emerged in the last decade as a respected and accomplished leader in the Latino arts community of Los Angeles,” said exhibition organizer Ortiz. “Her recognition, and a celebration of her work, is long overdue.”

Seven more Angeleno artists will be joining Ms. Garcia in the RRAFF exhibition: Abel Alejandre, Lili Bernard, Joe Bravo, Pablo Cristi, Yolanda Gonzalez, CiCi Segura Gonzalez and Patricia Krebs.

The sponsoring organization, the RRAFF, was established in 2004 by Dr. John Ramirez, a media studies scholar at California State University and his colleague Dr. Richard T. Rodriguez. The RRAFF was designed to provide a showcase for independent U.S. Latina/o filmmakers from across the country. Dr. Ramirez has served as the Executive Director of the Festival since its inception; 2011 marks its eighth year of continuous operation.
